hi guys. i have a mac, which will be connected wired, a desktop pc which will be connected wirelessly (although i am setting up the wireless security via the pc as it is the one everything is installed on), a bt voyager 2500, and now, after 4 months of rowing with BT about a faulty wireless pci adaptor card, they have sent me a wireless usb adaptor (nice bit of kit if i do say so myself!) - the "voyager 1055 usb adaptor".
now, in the router configuration utility i have several options for securing my wireless network, namely:-
64bit wep; 128bit wep; WPA-PSK; WPA; 802.1x; WPA2; WPA2-PSK; mixed WPA2/WPA; mixed WPA2/WPA-PSK...
also, there are options for data encryption consisting of:-
TKIP; AES; TKIP+AES
this is the order they are listed, so i assume pretty much in order of strength of security. i have a 2mb connex, which should hopefully jump to about 6-8mb when my exchange is upgraded to adsl max on 31/03 (tentative date).
i am aware there are certain overheads when using security, but this shouldn't be too much of a prob from what i saw with WPA on my 1800hg (which i have still got, and will flog to a good home and throw in a free voyager 220v unused, for a decent offer and collection or postage paid!  all original packaging, manuals, and discs included). i would like this to be as secure as possible, and allow me to share files etc between my pc and mac. when i have the spare cash, i am thinking of getting a nas/server of some sort, and ripping all my films to that as well. (errr... obviously only the ones i own the copyright for  ) but that is some way off.
can anyone advise me as to what they would recommend, and hopefully how to go about setting it up (i managed to block myself out of the wireless connex once before when my girlf threw away the paper i had the 64 digit hexadecimal key written on...  )
any and all advice is muchly appreciated...
incidentally, if anyone does fancy the 1800 and 220v combo, and comes to pick it up, i will bung in a mug of premium, freshly ground, pure silk-in-a-cup columbian coffee... or cuban which is almost as nice...
ps i have just spotted a "BT home network pc adaptor" which they sent me in error, and told me i can keep, that you can have as well... i believe it is for use in networking pc's together using multiple phone sockets...

You need to choose the strongest security that is supported by all the wireless devices.
WPA2 AES is the strongest, but needs hardware support that may not be there.
WPA TKIP is pretty much unbreakable anyway.
WEP is better than nothing....
You can find a random key generator here http://tinyurl.com/pgpk2
Set up the security on the router first - RTFM.
With XP SP2 you need only select the WLAN you want to connect to then put the genrated key in when prompted.
Some cards use a proprietory applet, but the process is much the same.
To save typos I put the key onto a pen drive (or floppy) so as I can copy and paste it in.

| cheers dave, those links where handy, any chance of stickying them in an faq (if not already done)? don't know if you saw my other post about networking the mac and pc, but i just can't seem to get the file sharing going... any thoughts anyone?
