Surprised this handheld is not mentioned in your retro pages and the forum. It seems to be perfect for anyone interested in emulation of old machines.
http://craig.gp2x.de/review/GP2XReview.html a review with video of the machine.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gp2x A wiki with lots of info.
Im waiting for mine to arrive, has anyone got experience of them here?

Yes, I did do a search before posting but only seen one mention of it and couldnt understand why not many retro lads seemed to talk of it here..
As far as the mag feature, unfortunatly last week I said goodbye to several years of MM, much to the horror of my recycling peeps backs. Just so that they could be recycled into something less useful, I was going thru a green day I think, anyway I cant remeber it off hand but did it get a good review?
I will give a mini review after I get over the shock of playing on a handheld, something I aint much done before but looking forward to trying some of those emus out, hopefully I will be able to play some of those oldies without too much trouble, SD card permitting I suppose if you read my other post.
I will be trying out Amiga, MAME & C64 stuff mainly but Atari ST - Oids will be on there as well If I can find it.

I thought the Micromart article was about its predecessor the GP32? Even if the GP2X was reviewed, it's certainly time that there was another mention of it in Micromart's Retro/Linux section.
It seems like an impressive produce for a good price, especially when you consider how much smaller the developers are than Nintendo/Sony.
To me it's worth the price just for decent Neo Geo emulation on the move.

Ok, got my GP2X today, It is a first edition model and was second hand but had hardly been used, included were the usb cable still sealed and the extra screen cover to be added, overall in new condition.
Now then it still had the original v1 firmware and I knew once I'd checked it out best I could I wanted to upgrade this asap to v2 firmware, potentialy I could wreck my new toy but having done many bios upgrades assumed the same risk, hopefully.
So I read thru quickly on the upgrade nothing to bad and stuck a freshly formatted 256mb SD card in the slot with the new firmware on only, I looked in the explorer menu on the GP2X and made sure it could read the card as potential problems can occour if it cant read the card.
Using a 3volt psu and not batteries I turned it on and the firmware upgrade began, It seemed to go well then it stuck on the loading screen of the new software.. oh! So further quick reading said give it a few minutes and if its still there reset, so.. waited and eventually I had to follow the guide and restart the console fingers on Start/Select,it said.. My head started aching now with the possible thought of bricking it but it started and continued with the upgrade patching and eventually formatting the on board NAND memory, phew Im glad that it worked.
Now then, next step after removing my 256mb card was to try my 2gb card out, the one I have so much trouble with trying to format but eventually got working, I hoped.. So slipping it into the slot and going to the games menu, well I'll be blowed there were all the emulaters I had added.
Now, trying these emulaters out while not hard, not knowing the keys means you tend to go back and forward until you find what works, readme files are normally included but hey, when do you read these, when you eventually give up I suppose?
Trying MAME out first, there are several versions, I just bunged the first one on I come to and it loaded a list of games, these are the MAME 34 set. I went right to Viewpoint my fav game, well apart from Dragon Spirit, that is. Hey it worked first time although the sound was low, I fixed that later in the settings menu.
The next was a Megadrive emu, not a fan but c'mon they were popular so trying sonic, yep another first time starter and works well..
Atari ST next, complete with GEM desktop & virtual keyboard, yes OIDS works.. ohh my, at last lots of under the sheets action tonight
Finally for now, Amiga.. Despite my fav machine I thought this emu was the hardest to work out, in the few minutes I had used the machine. After a bit of a maze like start I eventually got Giana sisters working fine although no sound, something to look into, as is disk swapping and control mapping, which Im unsure to do at the minute, but hey good things come to those who wait.
Overall im very pleased, the screen is bright, sound tinny but ok, joypad isnt as bad as some peeps moan on about, you can get a TV out adapter and Ni-cads are recommended. Now to look at some of this homebrew stuff, see ya.

Yes, the MM article was for the earlier model, and I agree that at least a review of new version is due. That's why a month ago I requested a review sample from what appeared to be the UK's sole importer and never received even a reply... What can you do? I know I just don't have time to really use one right now, else I'd buy one myself and review that.

Hi Jason, theres a possibilty they didnt have any in stock as a new mark2 version just came out a week or so ago. I tried to buy one then but they didnt have any it seems, thats why I bought a second hand one. Maybe try again, you never know?
BTW, the new one has a different LCD screen, v2 firmware and the joypad is twisted slightly to make it easier while holding, as it is quite small. I do think that twist could be a good thing after playing mine today.

I specifically requsted the new version -- they were taking pre-orders at the time. As the UK's sole distributor, you'd've thought they'd want the coverage in a national magzine, but it appears not. Not even the courtesy of a reply.

Its a shame that they didnt reply, you would think they would want to provide a unit for review?
Well I played around with my GP2X today, its pretty good, most emulators do work fine, thanks to the programmers developing these emulators, and they are updated fairly regular.
Sorted my Amiga emu out and despite the lack of buttons its actually very easy to swap between joypad, mouse & virtual keyboard, the sound aint to good with this emu and its actually better without the sound but hopefully the progammer will develop it more and eventually give decent sound. I have played several games including Speedball, Kick Off, Buggy boy, Deutrious & Chaos Engine to name a few.
One problem and Im sure this must happen on other hand helds wi | | | |
