Hi all,
Just started getting a problem with my linksys wag354g router and my ibook. My ibook seems to drop its connection periodically, doesnt seem to be caused by anything but the wireless signal will just disappear and my ssid will not be found. If I plug the ibook into a rg45 then I appear to have no problem and router reports that the internet hasnt had any breaks. I do run the software updates on my ibook quite regularly so wondered if it might be that.
My ibook is the 12" g4 ppc tiger version. My pc doesnt appear to have the same issues but will keep a close eye on it. googling the problem appears to yeild quite a few results but non in particular to my router model. Any ideas on what i should try next. If I reseat my wifi card will that invalidate the warranty!?

| I also have the same router as your self. KillFC. Resetting the router shouldn't invalidate your warrenty for it. But could stop windows been able to make a proper connection to the net with it. If its on a wired line!? In my case i had awful problems getting windows to reconnise it whenever i changed the settings. I actually had to reinstall windows in that case. But on the wireless connections, it had no problems at all. after changing the settings. I found this very strange, as i read some excellent reviews about it, online. But it never quiet done what it said on the box. Still a improvement from my SpeedTouch 330. You could try it. But appart from that iam unsure what else you could try. Sorry. VIPeR

Hi KillFC
I had something similar on my old G4 PowerMac with a Netgear DG834 router. It would appear to lose the signal and would need a re-boot to get it back. It was cured by an update to wireless connectivity from Apple (a couple of years ago). This was when running OS X 10.3, what OS are you running?
Re-seating the WiFi card shouldn't invalidate your warranty. Make sure you have the latest firmware update for it (I presume it will be an Apple Airport Extreme card). Go and trawl Apple's Knowledge Base fo details on WiFi and stuff associated with it.
I still have the Netgear router and use it with a Powermac G5 wirelessly without much of a problem. If it ever does 'lose' the signal I find re-booting the router cures it. Mine is quite old on an early firmware and if left powered 24/7 tends to drop wireless connections after a few days.

Thanks for the suggestions. My os is tiger so its 10.4, a reboot doesnt always seem to help, im tempted to say that it might be a loose wifi card in me ibook (airport extreme) but once I've removed the keyboard there isw a wire mesh where the instructions on the ibook pdf from apple say there isnt!? still might be worth a go would rule out that I suppose. Just found it weird that it just started happening then looking over the net there was a few threads with a similar issue on the apple site that had a vast amount of people reading it.
re-reading my original post I didnt make it that clear that the connection drops and then sometimes comes back up on its own accord and other unusual randomness.
oh well I'll have a further fiddle when I can and report back.

| Just had something spring to mind. The Apple WiFi cards use an external antenna and not an internal one as per many WiFi cards. The can be a little fiddly and yours may have come loose. You should see a thin lead connected to the edge of the card (probably under the mesh cover). Make sure its in properly and just give a little twist in its socket in case the contact it makes is not too good.

Hi,
just thought i'd give anyone interest on a close for this. I've discovered that its the airport thats at fault, as my ibook is a bluetooth edition its is intergrated into the mobo, ie not a card under the keyboard. as its still in warranty then I'm gonna send it back to the guys to fix it.

At least you've found the problem. Apple shouldn't take too long in sorting it out. I have to say I'm not a fan of integrating all the WiFi, bluetooth, etc onto the mobo. If something goes down outside of warranty you are really stuck with either fitting USB or PCMCIA devices - in past experience failures to mobo components means new mobo.
