having seen the extra peripherals available for the C64 such as the super cpu, IDE controllers ect.. has anyone developed similar hardware for the spectrum? or attempted to make a Modern equivalent of the spectrum?

There's been some clones at run at about double the speed, and one at about 20Mhz, but clones are a bit different than adding an accellerator card. There are plenty of storage solutions becoming available too, SD-Card readers, IDE interfaces and other such things.
I have mentioned them from time to time, honest...
Regards,
Shaun.
