Hi Guys,

After umming and arring (is that spelt right?) about it, I finally bought myself an Imac G4, hopefully this is good for £300? I don't know? It looks like it's worth £300 so I'm happy!

What kind of performance will I expect from the beast? I'm going to be using it for Quark and Indesign, and Itunes -- can't see it struggling with all that.

Here's the spec:

Preloaded With OS X V10.4.7 Tiger !
iLife 06 - iDVD, iPhoto, iWeb, iMovie HD, iTunes, GarageBand !
Adobe Creative Suite 2 Premium- Photoshop, Illustrator, Image Ready, Go Live, In Design, Bridge
Roxio - Toast 7 Titanium, Motion Pictures HD, CD Spin Doctor, Discus RE
Microsoft Office 2004 - Word, Excel, Entourage, Powerpoint

Key Features

15" (viewable) active matrix Flat LCD Display with tilt and swivel
700MHz PowerPC G4 Processor
512MB SDRAM
40GB Ultra ATA hard drive
CDRW Drive
NVIDIA GeForce 2 MX Graphics Processor with 32 MB DDR video memory
10/100 Base-T Ethernet Port
56k Modem
2x Firewire Ports
3x USB Ports
Macally USB Keyboard & Optical Mouse

What do we reckon?

HHMM very nice little beast you got there, and a very good price in my opinion. I have been looking at a similar base unit only for £299 plus VAT. No monitor or Apps. so top shopping. jeallous as hell enjoy.

It looks like a pretty nice system for a reasonable price, but personally I'd upgrade it to 1Gb RAM.

Mac OS X definitely benefits from plenty of memory, as do DTP apps like Quark and Indesign if they're used heavily.

thanks for the reply guys, yes I think I will upgrade the ram, any chance of overclocking or any other improvements I can make with this system?

This really is the first ever mac I've ever owned, It's exciting learning something new in the IT world.

Edit: is is standard PC133 ram I need, and is it just one stick of 512 it'll take, or will it already have 2 sticks installed?

Check Apple's web site Lee, I have a feeling that the G4 iMac takes SODIMM memory sticks and not nrmal PC133 ones. I also seem to remember that it only has 1 slot for RAM, its under the flap at the bottom of the base. Have a feeling that the biggest RAM you can get in is 512MB giving you a total of 640MB as it has 128MB soldered onto the motherboard.

I may be completely wrong with this and confusing it with the early G3 iBook laptops. Check it out.

But, yes, good buy whatever. I'm looking to buy a couple of similar iMacs in next few months. Am dropping Freeview & Sky into bedrooms as I'm having an extension built. Thought G4 iMacs with external Elgato EyeTV tuners would serve nicely as computers & TV's in one nice package.
