Hi, ive been reading this with interest as i build the odd PC for work collegues once in a while, im just wondering do most people that build pcs buy a complete copy of windows each time they make one, by that i mean the productid manual and media, and not do these recovery disk things pb, tiny and companies like that are so fond of, if not then how do you buy the operating system?

I would like to respond in general terms to GSteve's very well written and formulated arguments re: ADSL rollout in the UK.

Firstly, I have to say that the points you made were both fair, logical and appropriate. However (and you knew this was coming, didn't you ?!) I would also say this:-

One; Coverage.

The point you raised, for example, in defence of your employers regarding the financial viability of converting an exchange for "3 people" to "download and play games" is probably accurate, but consider this. BT are making big claims about the rate of takeup and the ever-expanding coverage. We see jazzy TV advertisements encouraging people to "get into the fast lane" when in fact, the fast lane is unavailable!

I completely agree with your point, but am simply offering an explanation as to why there has been criticism levelled at BT in the first place.

Two; Cost.

I don't think £30.00 per month is too much. I pay £15.99 for BT Internet (ISDN) and would gladly pay double for 8 times the speed increase! In terms of ratios, ADSL offers four times the value for money at £30.00!!! See (1) for some elucidation as to my current predicament!

Three; Timescales.

This is BT's fault in that it should educate people better so that they are made aware of what is involved. Being in IT myself, some people are convinced that the most complex thing in a computer is the "On" button! These are the people who cause our technical lines the most hassle!

Four; Download Speed.

See (3) re: education!

Five; Service Levels

See (3) re: education!

In summary, well said!

Depends on your moral outlook, dale.Legally you should install a
new copy with its own license for each new customer.Software houses in micromart magazine will oblige
This doesnt always happen, especially when the machine is built for family and freinds.
The recovery disk so loved by the "look !-big numbers!" brigade is not much more than a clone of the pattern configuration and as such will fall foul of upgrades and replacement.

Its on my To Do list.

But not right at the top...
