Your wireless router is acting as the gateway to the internet, the usb adapter on the kid's computer is connecting to the router which then allows it access to the internet. Which is fine, you don't need to set up a "network" as such. Although if you wanted to share files, or a printer perhaps, between the computers, you would need to set up a workgroup. Easy to do in XP, if that's what you're using. Go to "my network places", and click on "network setup wizard", follow it through.

Eek, no password needed very dodgy, you should really secure the wireless network.

Use the network wizard to set up a home network on each. Don't forget to configure your firewall to allow access each to the other.
Good luck.

No just run the standard network wizard. You must have already set up the wireless side when you installed the router as you can access the internet through it.
Just make sure that you give the same network name to each computer and set up the firewall to allow access.
