I'm really lookig for some support on this one and its my first time using the forum after reading the mag for years!

I have a home desktop computer that connects to the internet via a wirelss router in another room. ie there is no wired connection to the router. I also have a 'work' laptop that works on a work network and requires me to logt on. It can already use the internet using my wreless router.

I would like to use the printer that is connected to my home desktop to print from my laptop.I know I need to set up a home network which I was going to do using the network wizard, but have realised that the work laptop requires me to log on to it when I start it up. If I add another network to it, will this remove the settings from my work network or will it just give me anotheer choice in the list of domains when I first log in.

Secondly when I log in will it mean my 'my documents' and settings will be different?

Cheers for anyone who can help

You don't have to add a "network" to it, indeed if the machine is locked down properly you won't be able to.
Quite possible you won't see the other machine via Network Places etc, but you will be able to attach to it via it's IP address.

To find out it's IP address, from a cmd prompt type ipconfig.
Where you would use the machine name, use the IP address
i.e rather than \\machine name\share it's now \\ip address\share

Hope this makes some sense

Cheers Dave

it seems to be working to some extent although not always.

I have logged on to the machine only and then it sees my networked machine at home.

Hello mate - I had some problems with my work laptop at home - specifically when we changed from using Microsoft VPN to Nortel VPN for connecting to work from home.

If the symptom is that you can see your home PC from the laptop before you connect to work but not after, then you may be in the same boat as me.

I tore my hair out for ages, before establishing that the Nortel VPN client won't allow you to break out of the VPN tunnel onto your local (home) network.

If this is the case, all is not lost, but to save running up a blind alley please post back and confirm if your problem matches the one I had (short answer is you can get round it by printing across the internet rather than direct to your local [home] LAN).

No VPN should let you see your home network, it wouldn't be a "private Network" if it did.

Once you are VPN'd in all you should see is your work network mand that's it.

That makes sense Dave - maybe no great surprise that it was the MS VPN client that let me do that (probably why we switched to Nortel). I had to use the "Net Use LPT1" command, but doing so could access the (at the time) home PC and the printer connected to it!

Nowadays I use a D-link print server that supports IPP and map the printers via the router (using a dyndns domain name). I am assuming that the original poster wants to print from his laptop while connected to work (which was my problem back in the day). If so then IPP could be a solution.

Cheers.

I may have confused you.

All I am trying to do is use my work laptop while sitting at home to print from a printer connected to my home desktop PC. I think Dave may be correct but I have no idea where to even start.

Hello again mate - more like I've probably confused you!

Just to clarify, are you trying to print from your work laptop while it is connected to your work network? If so are you using a VPN connection to connect to the work network.
