Afternoon all

I have had a request from a friend who has 2x Netgear DG834G v3`s. 1 being upstairs connected to a pc via ethernet and a wireless connection to a laptop, and the other would be situated downstairs connected to the xbox 360 via ethernet while also providing wireless access for the laptop.

He wants to create a wireless network between the two.

Would I be able to do this ?

Also this is a long distance project, he being in Mansfield, me here in Bolton + he not being a techie, I would have to explain how to setup over the phone !

Hoping that someone could help me out.

Hi

Tell your friend he will only require one of those wireless routers. This will be connected to the phone line conventionally and make the rest of his network wireless. He can then connect his Xbox wirelessly to his network (can't give any advice on this, never done it...) using a wireless USB adapter.

Using two routers on any network is just asking for lots and lots of trouble!

The Netgear router is four devices in one. It has a modem for the internet, a router to share that internet connection, a switch to add computers to the router's internet connection using cables and a wireless access point to add computers wirelessly. Extending his network either by cable or wirelessly should be done via the switch/access point and not another router.

As the signal will only be travelling one floor of the house the wireless part shouldn't need an extra aerial or access point to extend the wireless range - depending on the construction of the house.

Hope this helps.

As Wayzgoose says; 2 routers is asking for trouble, especially as on default settings they will both be doling out the same IP addresses locally.
That would stop the second router from "routing".
There is no way to join them wirelessly either.

Although there is a solution (of sorts) you really don't want to go there, believe me
Also as Wayzgoose has said, there really is no need.
Just one point, if the XBox needs to be wireless you need an ethernet wireless adapter, not a USB one.
Looks like they are comfortable running an ethernet lead though, which is a lot easier!

i have a wireless bridge set up, it was between my two belkin routers but is now between my BT-homehub and 1 belkin wireless router. I have done this because my dad would not let me go wired and i needed to expand the network to the other side of our house.

It works (most of the time)
but i will say two things about it
1) it was a nightmare to set up, there is no way you want to go and try setting this up via phone etc
2) it makes troubleshooting the network about 200times worse

trust me its allot more hassle then its worth, the best solution for your friend would be:
a usb wireless dongle

or power over Ethernet

Thanks for the input guys.

1 Question - would my friend need the microsoft wireless adaptor seen here http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/ProductInfo.asp?WebProductID=299222

Or would i be able to use a generic USB dongle ?

Tia, Paul.

Thankyou to everyone who has taken the time to reply

I got a few of the details wrong on the original post

My friend wants to have an ethernet connection to the xbox from the wireless router, which in turn is wirelessly connected to the router upstairs. He does not require wireless to the laptop as he gets a good signal from the upstairs 1.

Are we going to still have problems with the wireless bridging setup ?

To alex 3410, yes it's for the xbox 360, am i correct in assuming that we will not have to purchase the m/soft adaptor which is v-expensive at £50, and instead purchasing a USB dongle by any other manufacturer ? Which can be purchased for less than £10 ?

Regards.

A USB dongle won't work on the XBox as it need drivers, which wll be windows only.
You need an ethernet wireless convertor such as this @ £32 http://tinyurl.com/3dvvsv
Don't even attempt to use the 2nd Netgear to create a wireless bridge, because it won't work!

Take my word on this, I do it for a living
