left hand building is listed so limited option regarding drilling holes, right hand building has been shortened so to keep to scale w-->z is really double the distance shown. distance from x--> z is about 54 yards and x--> w is about 22 yards. The gap between the buildings is concrete

my question is .... is it likely to get a reliable wireless connection  between the computers y and z whose positions are fixed (possibly using a remote antenna in the z computer to get the antenna outside the wall. there is nothing in the way of a direct line between x and z. Does single glazed window cut much off the range ?

would a wireless router at positions w and x be a better bet connecting z & w by ethernet cable

or is best solution be to go for wired connection between z and y with ethernet cable clipped to a support wire between the two buildings. total cable length then is going to be approx 90 metres

Cheers,

Keith.

I do have a wireless solution to this, it's the sort of thing I do regularly.

However, there may be an easier way
Do the two buildings share the same electric mains wiring?

hi dave ,

erm ...yep they do ...sorta ....the right hand building houses the main incoming switchboard and isolator but as its a farm its a three phase supply. I had wondered about using those mains things but would both computers (the house and parlour one) need to be on the same phase? another fuse board is near to computer z and the wiring in that is ancient and extremely ugly

Cheers,

Keith.

Not qualified to answer that one as I know nothing about leccy.
Homeplug solution for 2 devices would cost you about £80

I'll stick to what I know - wireless.

Solution One
A wireless bridge using APs designed for the job and external antennas (x can be inside the window).
Cost £160ish
Gives you an ethernet connection at either end.

Solution Two
High power router at x, pci card with external antenna at z
Cost £160ish - ADSL a bit extra

For both solutions, building z can be made wireless for an extra £40.
Picture of antenna here http://tinyurl.com/gjmob
There aren't much bigger than a fag packet and can be painted.

As the prices are the same, it boils down to what infrastructure you currently have where.
If you have a router you are happy with then Solution One makes more sense.
If you don't have a router then Solution Two may be better.

If you want the shopping lists, just ask.

hi dave

y has a 4 port adsl modem router with two unused ports ,athlon3000+ running XP

z is P2 400 running windows 98 (not second edition) with spare ethernet socket

have a Linksys WRT54G wireless router available from a unstarted plan to make home wireless if thats any good to go at position x.

does a window have much effect on signal range?

is it easier to run an ethernet cable from z to w and put some sort of shorter range/cheapo wireless device at w. have a load of ethernet cable here left over from parlour installation

Cheers,

Keith.

If only y and z were the other way round...
P2 400 on 98, probably better to stick to ethernet as iIt will be 100% relaible.

I would be tempted to run a cable all the way from y to z.
90 meteres should be OK on Cat5 - I have seen 150 work.
You could always break the cable at positon w and put a cheap switch in.

Using the spare Linksys WRT54G in the equation is sledgehammer and nut time.
I'd flog it, as if you ever want to go wireless you'll be better off with an Access Point as you already have a router.

EDIT - no a window shouldn't adversely affect the signal.

update:

looking at this again now as I'm getting fed up with transferring the data between the computers on CD.

in the meantime the original modem went to the great electronic graveyard and was replaced with a wireless adsl base station phillips SNA6500 a situated at 'm' . I used lappy and USB buffalo airstation and could get and maintain signal at a and b. a had transfer rate of 9Mbps and is inside  and b had transfer rate of 18Mbps and is outside.

with this in mind would a PCI wireless card and a outdoor outdoor antenna with cable through a hole in the wall at b (possibly 1 metre of cable needed) be the easiest way to get a wireless connection and what kit and cost would i need. Also remembering its still a win 98 (not second edition so usb pen drives dont work and usb 1 ports)

Cheers,

Keith.
