Installed version of AOS for embedded systems can be as little as 16 Meg, all in, according to Rogue, I think, whereas Microsoft are proud to announce that the stripped down embedded version of Windows XP Embedded edition, especially created for their Windows Standard Robotics Base.. will be a ,mere, 300 Meg.
Hmm

Its just a shame the general population who used to love amigas have no machine they can run the OS on these days, personally I know its not likely to happen but I would drop Windows tomorrow if I could install OS4 on a PC.... Paula - Soundblaster = no contest, Agnus - NVidia (pick a card) = no contest, 68xxx - Any recent cpu.......... But OS4 - Windows? I believe OS4 would knock spots off the competition in terms of system requirements/overhead and management of all these powerful bits of kit we have bolted together these days. I was once tempted to dual boot windows and linux, but the families needs and less complication drew us back to the dark side. Recently I have taken an interest in the idea of booting a whole operating system from a flash ram device, but again same applies.. what Im getting at is it needs to be targeted at the average user, the masses who Im sure would love the operating system as they once did under the label Commodore, but dont want to be buying new machines every year just to keep up with the jones's, an operating system that does everything they want, is as configurable as they want and makes their home computer feel like a supercomputer, with a lot less problems and far more elegance. Macs could be good if they werent viewed as buisiness/expensive bricks with no games and little control over personalisation.
Just two-pence worth, probably said before and considered/rejected by the management/economics, but I suggest you give it another look. With Dell offering PCs with linux, isnt OS4 possible these days?. All you need to provide is a messenger, browser, sleek operating system which the user can get their hands as dirty as they want with, nothing hidden or devious, and the user decides what gets installed on 'their' computer not the installer... games? yes thats a multi-layered problem to overcome because that would attract most of the target audience but they would be fantastic on such a resource friendly OS, and wouldnt be too hard to convert I shouldnt think. Bring Jez san and Argonaut software back into the fold, Dark Basic and its superb compiler too had its roots with Amiga... just to give people the tools to get creative again. Someone with a far better grasp on the current situation will probably pick holes in my views, but I am just relaying what I would love to happen as part of a potential future amiga scene, perhaps one day leading to a 'custom PC', designed for your OS.... rebirth.
Things I used to love about the amiga?, public domain, MUI (Magic User Interface), Term, Browser (Very configureable file management software, with menu items the user creates which launch user programmed batch files to operate on the selected files... I would still use that antiquated software instead of Explorer), and too many innovative games spawned by old school backroom coders (in assembler no less) to count, which these days would be thrown in the 'not commercially viable' bin.
EDIT: Sculpt 3D followed by Imagine (Couldnt afford Lightwave at the time), and Deluxe Paint, all fantastic creative tools which were within reach of the great unwashed. How many home users can afford 3DSMax or Photoshop, more importantly how many home users can support their children in their desire to prosper with todays technology? "Dad I want to get into graphics" "Sorry kid I've got a mortgage already". And "Hey kids look I just installed Open Office, now your homeworks no problem eh?, erm guys?, honey where did the kids go?"
On a lighter note jump in bed with phony, PS4/mouse/keyboard/OS5/Lower the price... bingo, Xtrabox can spin as many degrees as it wants burning a smoking uncool hole in MS unvestments... then again that would be an alternate reality wouldn't it. And theres always the occasional quantum physics rootkit to be wary of. Hmmm, second thoughts, pay a plumber a visit, he still manages to give quality and not make us feel like the cashcows we are. EDIT2: Oh wait, we never did catch them all. Ho hum, what was my point?.
I wish the amiga and whoever 'owns' the name, future prosperity. Please make it happen, and hopefully the market monopolizers wont hamstring the company again. Seemed to me Amiga was too important to ignore.

| Could they not make a version of OS4 that is hardware specific to one Intel or AMD chipsets like what apple does i,m sure the windows or linux Ati ne NVidia video drivers could be hacked to work that just leaves sound for a basic setup. I know i would build a one off setup if i knew it would work with OS4. A current mid range system with OS4 would be great keep the price down. This is probably impossible but i can dream
