Hi all,
Age old story, now that i have several spare bits and pieces lying around i will meld these into 1 system for which i would like to dabble in linux.
My goal eventually will be to have a linux box running as a firewall for my little network.
But i have no idea what version of linux to start with and what sort of spec system i would be looking at to act as the firewall.
As always, your comments are greatly appreciated.

There was something about this in the magazine a while ago - if you're just running a PC as a hardware firewall, Smoothwall Linux running on a minimal old Pentium box was the choice, although there may be some more to choose from by now.

You can run a router/firewall from a 486 with 16Meg ram and just a floppy disc. With a modem and 1 network card or 2 network cards you can set it all up using Freesco.
This boots and runs from a floppy. I have been using this with my network ( NTL cable ) for 2 years and in all that time the 486 has only been powered down when I have had power of in my home to do rewiring. It has never crashed.

I run Windows under Linux. It doesn't usually crash then. When it does I can still carry on computing :-))
