| Hi Aaron I am really enjoying your contributions, having picked up much useful knowledge, from yourself and your colleagues. My queries are the result of the scarily developing genius that is my 14-year old grandson. After wirelessly networking his home, using a laptop as his server, 2 external hard drives (one runs the LAN) and what began life as a Medion PC (severely upgraded), Jack wants to use a SFF or similar as a Server, freeing the laptop for his mum, my daughter. Who is even more baffled by him than is granddad... Jack is currently helping to run the website at his Technology College, which is fortunately an establishment with respect for its IT kids. Even from other students, that is. However, he is experiencing certain frustrations with his home equipment, in that he has Server 2003 Enterprise Edition but cannot configure it. So I turn to you on his behalf: can you help? When I tell you that Jack suffers from Asperger's Syndrome, you will understand my pride in this young man and his achievements. Jack has ambitions about becoming a Games developer and I have no doubt that he will get there. The Asperger's gives him absolute Tunnel Vision, you see. What he starts, he has to finish. Successfully. Or else. I would be grateful for any advice you might be able to supply, in regard to configuring Connection Wizard for server 2003, Enterprise Edition. Also, what form would be best suited to building a Small Server box, with a minimum of components. And please remember - you might just be working for him, someday! Come to think of it, we might ALL be working for him ... Thanks Aaron Regards Bob W.

To one Bob from Another I'm not sure that Aaron actually reads the Forum, (the "Experts" are all freelancers, not on MM staff) so may never see your post. If you want to try contacting him direct for a reply in the Ask Aaron section, try e-mailing him at leo@micromart.co.uk - he is apparently still using Leo's old address. Additionally I'd suggest also posting in the Networking forum - we have some extremely knowledgable forumites to whom this is their bread and butter, but they may not necessarily spot your plea in the Messages to the Editor section.

My son has Asperger's so I know where you're coming from
Enterprise Edition is probably not the one to cut your teeth on.
There's an awful lot goes to make up a network and it's knowledge that has to be gained by experience as well as book learning.
He needs to do some research first before diving in or it will all end in tears.
First thing is networking - and I don't mean the wires.
DHCP and DNS are required, but may not need to be provided by the server.
I presume there is a router somewhere that is doing all that?
Then there's Active Directory - a huge vast subject.
A Domain will need to be set up, but if the clients aren't XP Pro or Vista business then they can't join.
User accounts will need to be created.
Some thought must be given to grouping people together into "security groups".
These groups are then used to provide permissions to shared areas.
I've only just started - there's an awful lot to consider.
It really isn't something you can say do this, do that.
It's far, far too big for that and the scale of the network i.e. a few PCs or 100's, doesn't really matter.
What he can do is get some books and experiment with a test network.
Don't be afraid to make a balls up and don't worry if it's so bad you have to start again.
Specific points we can help out with, but as an overall thing, it's not possible.
Hardware - anything will do, it's all about disk access.
A fast network card helps too.
My Windows Home Server is detailed in rig 3 and it's based on Server 2003.
No need for disks as big as mine just yet though
