You could save the image to a hdd or dvd's. As for other progs they would have to re-install them afterwards or let you know and you/they could make an incremental backup.

Most peoples pc's shouldn't change to much. I have a set of apps that suit my needs and so the system very rarely changes. Most pc's need a spring clean after 6 mths just through general use.

A fresh Windows XP install for me usually takes over an hour. Linux is under 30 minutes.

Is it ok to use any Windows XP SP2 install disk, if the machine did not come with one? i.e I could use one from work, and use the cd key on the side of the users machine. Is this legal?

XP and XP SP2 use different keys so it will not work.

Sorry just re-read. As long as both machines are using the same version of xp then you can use the cd...
