I wonder if anyone else has noticed something interesting in the computing world?

Powerful GPU, DSP cards, hardware processing of data offloading requiremtns from the CPU. Memory access at double rate, Preemptive multitasking kernals, multiple screens and desktops at differeing resolutions, and now OS thats designed to crash and reboot, rather than attempt to shut down gracefully on a fault.

Everyones turning Amiga, theyre just not accepting it, and so, theyre really messing the things up 8(

Its a pity, but if Tovaulds hadnt done exactly the same as Gates, Linux wouldve taken over the the computing market totally by now, be cause it wouldve been easy for the average person to use. In that, it wouldnt have been seen by them.

On the one hand, highly propietry code, now encrypted so that only the Company can own it, And Any Work Done On It.

On the other, fully open source, which will be unable to run on secure encypted boards, ie, Linux etc.

In the middle. AOS. Kernel, protected propietry code, but anyone can write anything they want, and give it away or not, or even get it approved and accepted by the OS core in rare circumstances.

Something you can do whatever you want with at all, on your own gear, and you always have something that works to fall back to.

Persoanlly, I believe an A1 at £1400, is half the price, as long as its properly specced, and a PC at £500, is 3* the price, becuase theyre so badly crippled by Windows And Linux.

Mandrake 9.1 takes 256 Meg RAM just to install. I know from experience, I had to keep increasing the memeory from 128 Meg, until the machine stopped crashing during the install procedure. No other alterations.

AOS, classic, doesnt even really Have an install procedure. Just drag n drop the floppy onto the HD, and thats your files, directories, and most of your assigns taken care off (SYS: assign)

Amiga does it with style, its just the accountants havent learnt how to factor in those kinds of costs and benefits yet, so they ignore them, and so highly skew the results.

As an example, why else would Airbus refuse to pay to keep ONE Concorde flying, for airshows. The advertising equivalent is less than the cost of the support?

As a last point, Work done on genetic evolution of species, has proved that the larger and more unified a population becomes, the moe likely it is to split into wildly differeing subspecies. MS, Linux is main example, MAndrake, Debian, RedHat, Gentoo, Slackwear, Knoppix etc all is yet another.. and now comes the rise of the buy over the counter modds, for cases, drives, etc.

Amiga might be a so called niche, but it can fit into lots of niches, and the worse the market gets, the more niches Amiga can fill.

The age of dinosaurs is coming to the end, lets hope that AMiga is the adaptive quiet marsupial type creature scurrying in the undergrowth. After all, its that one that eventually reached for the stars 8)

Looks like the Chinese have successfully started their manned space program. How long till the US thretens to nuke Bejing, because they dont want to get back up to date with defenses, cos that would take money from their pockets? 8)

Wonder which OS they used for the Capsule computer?

What are you on about?

Firstly, what is it exactly that Linus Torvalds is supposed to have done that mirrors Mr Gates? As far as I am aware, the Linux kernel is available under the GNU GPL, which means that even that nice Mr Torvalds actually has no more rights than you do when it comes to what is done with the kernel. It just happens that since he is the one from whom Linux originated, people (in general) respect his wishes.

Mandrake needing 256MB to install? What planet are you on? I suspect that the problem is more to do with your hardware than the OS. I have 3 machines that have all had Mandrake 9.1 on them at some point, the lowest specced machine being a 300MHz P-II with, wait... 32Mb of RAM! Wow! A whole 1/8th of the amount of RAM you are quoting!

And as for evolution! The greater the population of a given species, the more likely that species is to diversify due to the over exploitation of the resources. If a minor adaptation allows an animal to consume a different type of abundant resource, it is more likely to succeed due to the under exploitation of it's newly acquired taste. I can see how the different distros of Linux may come across as speciation of an OS, but it isn't. They have all been targeted to certain audiences. Mandrake at the user who wants an easy to install, easy to use OS but someone who might want to explore a little deeper and do things for themselves. Slackware and Debian are aimed at those who are prepared to just dive right in and do it themselves - those who want to get their hands dirty. And where does Microsoft come into this exactly? Even with a loose view of OS speciation, I fail to see how anything by Microsoft could even come close!

As a Biologist with an (over active) interest in Computers and Linux, I would really like to know where these ideas came from?
