Alright all,

I'm sure that there are a lot of people who frequent here that like new games for their Speccy, C64, Atari 2600 or whatever... so I want to hear from people who don't like, or don't want to try new software on old computers or consoles.

Do you think new 8- (and 16-) bit games are a waste of time? Is 'retro' purely about nostalgia for you? Are the newest games (on current-gen consoles) just so much better than anything before that (8- and 16-bit) homebrew games feel like simple token efforts to please a minority of retro enthusiasts?

I'm not going to defend "new for old" here - I think that my opinions are fairly well known already... just interested to hear what people have to say.

Any opinions will be appreciated Smile

Regards,

Shaun.

when I read the retro section, it always disopoints me that the games are old games for old machines. back in the day it was always good to see a good conversion of your favourate arcade game on your speccy or C64 dispite the fact that the 8bits were hopelesly outclassed.

r-type and chase HQ on the spectrum for example were great attempts. its seams to me that modern retro games are just pollished versions of games that were old in 1988.

There has been a recent spate of ports and conversions, such as Knight Lore from the BBC Micro to the Atari XE/XL, and Jet Pac from the Spectrum to the Atari... but these remakes usually happen when either the game wasn't ported back in the 80s, or when the original version was weak. Jet Set Willy 2007 (again on the Atari 8-bit) is an example of this, as the original conversion of JSW by TyneSoft played and felt like a token effort.

However, there are good examples of originality. Many of the Cronosoft and Protovision titles are original in their own right.

Shaun.
