Ok, Before we go any further, I should admit, I am only 18 so don't remember amiga in its "hayday"

anyway, i have always had an interest in vintage computers, especially actually putting them to practical uses where they can serve a purpose. i actually use a 1989 (yes, made the year i was born) Psion MC 400 as a word processor.

Now, I am interested in getting an amiga, but i really have to justify it with some sort of point or use., is there anything that it can do or be used for in particular in today's world? or is it just a beige wedge with a slower processor than my calculator?

thanks in advance!

I would say depending on what you want to use it for.

Last time I used one for the internet the gfx weren't too good and I felt this was due to programmers went PC. Also the rest of the computer market seemed to leave Amiga's behind.

I would still prefer to use Amiga for video titling. They are good for word proccesing and database. you can use Amiga's for much the same as you do with PCs depending what you want from them.

It depends what you get with the Amiga as regards software a good place (I like) for second hand Amiga kit/software or even place an add for something you need is.

http://www.amibench.com/ although this caters for world wide users I never had any problems with buying from abroad or even from UK members.

I would as most (perhaps) avoid the A500, the A600 are pretty good the A1200 are even better. The A500 are not HDD compatible where the A600/1200 are. It is often best to go for the HDD compatbles as this saves disk swapping. I once had a A600 that didn't have HDD (although one could be fitted) to load a programme such as wordworth I had to swap 4 floppys until it was loaded into Ram. I did buy 2 external floppy drives and with the internal one this was less swapping. But installing this and others to a HDD was far better.

A500 are hdd compatible as long as you have a sidecar/attachment. i.e A530 Gvp .They use 2.5 hdd.
I wouldn`t like to think how much they would fetch on Ebay.
