The cost is enormous, who's going to pay?
People buy BB on price and it's a cut throat market, so it's not going to come from the ISPs.
BT Wholesale have the same problem for the same reason.

And we're not lagging behind other countries, not when you look at the whole picture and not some headline installations.
Places like Hong Kong and Singapore are easier to provide high speed networks for because the housing density is so high.

I'm sure they will come up with something sooner or later for costing, grants etc.

I read an article a while back that listed the average BB speed in other countries, although I cant remember where I read it (I think it was MM) and we were quite far behind then?

I may be wrong! although prices have dropped quite a bit recently.

A bit more in depth and background info from the BBC yesterday, including comment from BT regarding the existing copper wires, which doesn't necessarily make for optimistic reading, either for consumers or ISP's.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/technology/7350431.stm

The whole topic of comparing "average" BB speeds with other countries is fraught with misinformation etc.
Classically, France is all too often held up as a shining example with phenomenal speeds quoted and emphasis on high speed cable networks. Yes, maybe, if you live within 10 km of the Eiffel Tower. Almost anywhere else - either rubbish or non-existent.

From that article it seems they've already found a way to consume all it's capacity!
