There are very few viruses or trojans in the wild for Mac OS X. There are a few safety features built into the OS which help prevent you installing something suspect by mistake. I don't run any AV software at present as I don't feel the current threat is sufficient, however I will install AV if this changes in the future.

If you are concerned about security try the various AV utilities from Intego, namely VirusBarrier and other suites they sell.

Hey, hope your liking the new machine I would recommend getting an app called 'Little Snitch' which monitors all outgoing and inbound internet connections to your machine. So every time an app accesses the 'net you know about it & can choose to allow or stop the connection.

As for anti virus apps there really is no need at the moment. I've been using a Mac for 5+ years and have never had a virus/trojan/spyware. But I believe there is 1 virus that targets OS X out in the wild (it seems to come from porn sites, and you have to jump through some hoops to make it run but it's out there) so if you are wary I would suggest Intego's Virus Barrier X5.

Just google both apps to find a place to download them.

I forgot about ClamXav which is a free/donate ware app for OS X. Not tried it in ages as it was quite slow. This should knock most bugs out if you don't want or feel the need to get Virus barrier yet.

Other apps you should download and use are Cocktail (shareware) or Onyx (free). These are utilities that keep OS X sweet n clean by clearing old log files and running routine maintenance tasks. I run Onyx about once a month to keep everything under the hood happy. If you have an external Firewire hard drive you can use Carbon Copy Cloner to make a bootable mirror of your internal drive. This will enable you to copy all your data and be able to boot normally in the event of the internal drive having a problem.

The only caveat with the Firewire drive is apparently some drives won't boot - notably some Western Digital ones. Those by Lacie certainly can and those that use chipsets by Oxford are also OK.

There's a good guide to OS X security over here...
