Personally i wouldnt bother trying to overclock. I would try to max out the cpu on that board. If your board is revision 1.05 and you flash your bios to 1007 then you can put in an Athlon XP 2100+(Model 6)(Palomino).
This is according to the ASUS website. However i suspect that you can go higher. I would assume you can slap in a 266fsb 2600XP. I shall check this out for you first.

Ok...i have found people using a 2400xp but none running a 2600xp. Also it seems to be a bit troublesome to get them to work. A lot of messing around with jumpers to override the bios.
A bit of a lottery really. You could play it safe and get a 2100 palomino, but these will be hard to source.
But if you want the challenge then go for it.

Well unless there is something in particular that you need a cpu upgrade for right now then i would hold on a little. Save up a bit more cash and go for a real upgrade.
For about £110 you could get an nforce 2 mobo and a barton 2500xp. Thats a real upgrade and you will definately notice the speed differance. Ahh but your old ram wont work. So you will need some ram aswell....256 ddr400 is about £65 from crucial.co.uk
So it does all add up doesnt it but it is a very good upgrade.
Pete
p.s. if you can source a 1.4 really cheap i suppose its a very easy upgrade that can be done in 10 minutes or so. Try a second hand cpu. You might pick one up for £20 if you are lucky.
