Thanks Wiz. Apologies for not amending title, did not realise I was starting a new thread, will be more careful in future.
Just for reference I could not understand how I had come to make off the ends of my new cables incorrectly so I have done a little digging and now understand how this came about. I needed to run some longer cables for the 2 printers to reach the switch I was putting into my network and also to run from the switch to my router as I was putting the latter in a more accessible position as well. I bought a 30 metre length of RJ45 made off cable and used the first 5 metres or so of that, including the RJ45 connector on the one end, to make my first printer cable and an existing cable I had with a broken RJ45 connector, which I replaced, to make up the second printer cable. All the other cables I ran were either existing ones or new ones where I made both the ends off myself.
So both the printers had cables with one existing RJ45 connector at one end and a new RJ45 connector on the other end which I fitted. I used what I think is the standard wiring convention when fitting RJ45 connectors for straight through cables, White/Orange, Orange, White/Green, Blue, White/Blue, Green, White/Brown, Brown. The problem was the already made off ends were connected in a different sequence and so the printers were not active on the network and hence my seemingly unfathomable problem. After spotting this and ensuring both ends of the printer cables were made off using the same wiring sequence everything worked as it should. So the moral is - check everything even where you would not suspect a problem lay !!!!!
