Not a cry for help, but an exclamation of joy!

I've wanted gigabit networking at home for ages, and last week got a Netgear GS605 off of eBay for £20.

I already had an Intel Pro/1000MT in my main rig, and a generic Realtek PCI-Gigabit NIC in my testbed machine.

Moving an 800MB file on my old 100Mb router, took over two minutes.

Over this gigabit line, under 30 seconds!

I've just now changed to Jumbo Frames setting as well, with 16K MTU size on my main rig, but only 9K on my testbed.

That made it even faster, Getting solid 40MB/s transfers!

I've just ordered 2 more Pro/1000MT off of eBay, the bloke has 28 left so get them now!!!

Thats great! If you want to keep it that way steer clear of Vista!

Thank you Wiz, you made my mind up

Vista is now gone from Rig#1, it's going back to XP Pro as I type (on Rig#2).
I am fed up of the hissy fit it throws every time I go near the Windows Home Server.
It's not WHS, my kids XP boxes and my Linux get on just fine.
The wifes laptop (Vista basic) has the same problem too.

I'm also sick of the DRM and the whole damn interface.

It really was getting damn silly.
A part of the prep for going back to XP i had to export from Windows Mail.
The only option is to Outlook or Windows Mail.
To export to Outlook, you must have Outlook installed
I have the Office CD stored as files on WHS, it took literally 5 minutes until I could run setup.exe
That's not unusual and pushed me over the edge and made me determined to carry on.

However, I have a get out of jail free card as WHS has a backup of the Vista installation if I decide i need to go back.
At this moment I can't see that happening...

Luckily my demands from any O.S are very little and Vista's eyecandy keeps me happy. I put that down to the C2D powering it. Still amazes me that my little laptop knocks the socks off my old overclocked X2 rig.
