I visited my daughter to install some new Antivirus software (she'd had Norton stuff installed by default when buying the PC nearly 3 years ago) and to try and sort out a problem with a USB link to her camera software which had previously worked OK. Before I got started I went to Control Panel to have a look in Device Manager to see if any issues were highlighted but was shocked to get a message saying it couldn't be found and MMC wasn't available. I tried running services.msc as a direct command but that wasn't available either. I went through the routine of uninstalling Symantec/Norton (Yes, every hidden file/folder the full works, every last scrap including the registry entries) and then scanned the drive from a boot disk before installing the latest version of AVG and doing another full scan of her hard drive - nothing found. The other oddity I found was the main Administrator named as ASP.NET or similar - I know in outline what ASP.NET is but nothing beyond that. I should add that though I consider myself reasonably expert with hardware/software - having built all my own stuff since my first 286 (yes 286!), my daughter is a PC user and knows nothing of what goes on "under the bonnet" and had no hand in setting up the PC.
If I can manage it, I shall give myself a good kick up the backside for not getting involved with her PC from day one though, to be fair, I didn't know she'd bought it until a few months after the event (she didn't want to bother her busy Dad - but she knows I'd cross the planet for her).
Has anyone got any info on this? I've been running with Microsoft's Management Console for two or three years on three different PCs and different XP installs without any problems. Is it possible it just needs installing from her CD? I've picked up stuff from CAB files in the past but can't find any info on this particular problem.
Thanks, Harry

It could just be that the PATH variable is wrong.
Right click My Computer - Properties - Advanced - Environment Variables - System Variables
%SystemRoot%\system32 should be in there somewhere.
If it isn't add it at the start with a ; after it.
If it is there then try a Repair from an XP CD.
That's the second Repair, not the first "console" one.

Thanks for the suggestion, Dave. I should be visiting my daughter this weekend so I'll check that out.
