| The time has come to connect an additional gaming PC to the internet, up to now I've kept them stripped of all unnecessary software and run them lean and mean, but with an interest in MMO developing this will have to change a bit, inclusion of AVG etc. Don't laugh but my internet PC is a 1Gig P3 and as its well maintained surfs with no slow down on my Virgin Cable connection (Med up to 2 Mb/s) and is able to multi task- run real time security, stream music, open an application at the same time and its power consumption is neglible. I don't think a simple home network using a crossover ethernet cable would be the answer as the primary machine would slow it down, and I don't need to share printers etc, as all office /business systems are separate for security reasons, data transfer handled by ext HD. Virgin don't provide Router's or encourage their use but I'd only be using one at a time. Looking at some earlier posts and the sticky, am I right in thinking that the ethernet connection coming from the modem is plugged into the back of the router, and up to three PC's can be connected from this using ethernet cable, whilst sharing one ISP address. That Buffalo seems highly recommended, I've also looked at the:- Linksys Etherfast Cable/DSL Firewall Router with 4 Port Switch/VPN Endpoint - for Cable Users for £43.50 on Dabs.com and a cheaper model with no firewall mentioned £10 less. (I thought all Router's acted as a firewall) Your esteemed thoughts would be appreciated Regards Spritestomper

Use to have Virgin, got rid of them and change to Be.
Gave up trying use router with Virgin, made already slow connection even slower, I might have been just unlucky.
Numerous problems with assigning IP addresses since changing to Be, I now run three pc's and two print servers from a Netgear GS608 gigabit router, and not a single problem.
And now a consistent 4mb connection, not bad considering my line length, with Virgin 8mb package I was lucky to get 1mb, usually a lot lower, sometimes down to 88kbps in the evenings.
Also I now can play various games online, something I could never do with virgin.

| Hi Nightlight Here in Plymouth we are pretty well served by Virgin (Blueyonder cabled the whole city originally) and its a whole lot better than BT and there is no other cable alternative. At the moment I've got a very good deal with a loyal customer bonus, Phone (free calls) and Cable Broadband 2mb unlimited for £19.99. I may upgrade to the L package which at the moment is 4Mb with a soon free upgrade to 10mb for £7, perhaps less for my discount package. Even at the moment being near the centre of the city I'm receiving good bandwidth with hardly any slowdown or throttling. Do you think a Router would allow me to use two PC's, probably only one on the internet at any given moment. I don't want to connect up one of the higher spec machines as the primary as power consumption would be excessive, 24hrs a day and wasted for 3/4 of the time. Regards Spritestomper

Your very lucky not to have throttling, if you have such a good connection then there shouldn't any problems.
Make sure your router support gigabit ethernet, I've just upgraded to a Netgear GS608 which supports gigabit, and I have noticed a difference in speed, as did Gunman127 in a posting he made a few days ago about gigabit networking.
Also you could register an intrest in Be, on their site, they will then let you know when your exchange is upgraded.
Might have a long wait though, but they are upgrading exchanges at a fair rate now.
