Well, I read the article by Ian this afternoon and thought 'what the hell, I'll give it a go'. So downloaded it (slow connection at 20 to 50Kb/s) and installed it. Opened up no problem on my MacBook, not sure why you couldn't Ian. Had a play around with it and so far it seems OK. The only thing I don't like is te fact there is no icon for each application. When you open it up you get a window so you can choose what to run. Once you close the screen you don't get the 'menu' window back and you have to select the next app from the 'File' tab on the menu bar at the top of the screen.

I've used NeoOffice and it seems similar to OpenOffice (I know they are basically the same thing) but the OO beta has a slightly better look to it.

Anyone else had a dabble with it yet? Am wondering if anyone prefers it to MS Office. I don't use office apps much so am interested in other peoples opinions of the two.

Same here, I don't use Office apps much, honestly Textedit does all I really need. Got pages for the odd time someone sends me a word doc but it's a bit of a waste for the small amount I need it. Something free that does the same thing is always nice

How do you find OO speed wise? That's really important to me, if I'm writing something I want to just get straight to a blank doc asap and get working. I find some apps a bit cumbersome in that regard.

Hi BigAlbie As an OpenOffice fan, I have just been to
http://download.openoffice.org/680/?intcmp=1461 and downloaded/checksum'd the compressed Win32 and LinuxDEB files, so I'll give them a whirl after I have taken image 'snapshots' of the target Ubuntu 8.04 and WinXP partitions. I don't think that I'm expert enough to become a 'pukka' Beta tester, but I'll post my impressions on this thread.
Edit PS - NOGO for Ubuntu 8.04. The download consisted of x46 DEB files, obviously intended for application to a specific build-state of Ubuntu, which I'm not up to creating, despite a built-in dependency hierarchy. Next stop, the Win32 version.
It would be great if this provides not only a better basis for Mac/Win32/Linux file exchange, but fuller inter-operation, with similar if not identical 'app' controls.

i think ill give this a whirl this weekend Albie, I use MS Office:Mac extensively in work, 2004 and now 2008 and theyre both pretty horrid, namely because their resource hogs even on my s****y(edit:sw-anky) new iMac. And the seperate formatting pallette really drives me mad!! (can you attach it at all?)

how did you install OO? as a .PKG? or did you compile?
