Help I am confused !
I want to set up a home network between my and my wife's PCs. They are both in the same room so can be wired, but I also have an 400mhz Toshiba laptop with a wireless card so I suppose wireless support would be usefull.
My internet connection is unusual (SKY dsl ) via satellite from an outdoor dish to a PCI card in my wife's XP machine. An external modem (US robotics RS232) provides the uplink from this PC.(I use this system as I live in rural France and cannot get conventional broadband)
My Own PC is dual booting XP/Ubuntu Linux but the Sky Dsl will not work with Linux which is why I use my wife's PC for that.
I have tried using a crossover 10/100 cable and can file share but not share the internet connection, so I realise I need a router - or do I ?
Will a switch or Hub do the job, as the broadband connection will not be able to be plugged into it ?
Or will a router do the job - and can I plug cables into a wireless one ?

I'd rather be sailing !

Hi you wont need a router for that job only a switch as you could set up the computer with the internet connection to us ICS which would then take care of IP addressing for you. only thing you would need to worry about is to make sure your wifes pc has a spare network port. But by the sounds of your setup just a 4 port switch and 2 straight network cables should do the trick.

If both pc's are in the same room I wouldnt add any issues by getting a wireless compatible switch otherwise you will have the added worry of security and set up complexity.

try this linky for more info http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/networking/expert/crawford_02july01.mspx
