i am pretty sure i understand the basic principles of overclocking. i built this rig as a a learning experiance, my first build, and very successfull so far.
asus p5k premium mobo black pearl wi fi app. e6750 cpu. corsair dominator twin.8500c5d, 1066 mhz. 2x1024mb..thermalright 120 extreme heat sink plus 120mm fan.
plus some cooling mods... i am ready to take my first steps on my overclocking adventures...i am running vista home prem, theres bound to be snags..
my question is probably quite silly . ive set up my bios parameters, all the stuff to disable, all the stuff on auto. and all the settings i need to manual, ive set my ram
to the sticks reccomended timings 5 5 5 15 the voltage to 2.10 ime ready to go. my cpu is at 333 quad= 1333= 2.66 mhz. my ram is at 1067. thats not a 1 to 1 ratio
ok i can run my ram faster than my fsb. must be dividers?.. at 333 fsb my ram would be 667 at a 1 to 1 ratio, if i raise the fsb my ram will go up ?. thats quite an over clock
to get my ram back to 1067..or do i do the math to work out how much overclock would give 1067 depending on which divider i use, in my bios i appear to have a choice.
667 or 800 or 889 or 1067..or do i leave it at 1067 and modestly overclock and my bios will not let it go over..is a 1 to 1 ratio the ideal. i hope you all can see my confusion.
err latency umm i am just going to lie down for a bit..

Hello, Nice rig! If your going to overclock i would set the ram speed to 1:1 667mhz so it matches the FSB, Ensure that its set to manual in the bios and im sure you wrote that you set the memory timings manually to, If your ram is at stock timings there is no need to set the ram voltage manually for now.

Spread spectrum & PCI E spectrum, Disable both in bios, Set the PCIE freq to 100 manually so you dont cook your card and my advice with the cpu is to leave speedstep on, I have the same processor and mine is currently having an easy life @ 3.2GhZ with the ram 1:1 800Mhz, The cpu has been much higher but i dont need the extra speed but if you have good cooling it is up to you, The E6750 should go to 3.2 at stock vcore but on auto mine overvolts, I set mine manually to 1.3500 which works for me(might not work for you).

I would start first with setting my FSB at 400MHZ, This will take your CPU up to 3.2Ghz and ram @ 400Mhz,well below the rams limit of 1066MHz, If you take it higher i would use smaller increments.

Best thing is to wait for the real techs on here, Im just an enthusiast.

warm regards

Oh yeah, If you are running your ram at 1:1, If for example you overclock to 3.2Ghz with your ram at 800Mhz because your ram is rated for 1066Mhz you might be able to lower the timings manually to maybe 4 4 4 12.

I would advise leaving the memory timings until you have a stable overclock.

thanks for the advice, it works like a dream. 3.2 cpu. no sweat. ive got a good cooler. ran orthos cpu stress. got max 50c before dropping back to 45c. i did get a slight overvolt
to 1.4 so set it manualy to stock. tested still stable..my ram is at 400. stock timings 5 5 5 15. stock volts..what tweaks would improve my gaming experiance with regards the ram?
it is rated at 2.10v at 1066mh with 5 5 5 15 timings. this becomes addictive, ime thinking about my next build during the winter. i want to experiment with ducted airflow which
means building my own case so the mobo can be horizontal and the cpu cooler vertical as opposed to hanging off the side of the case supported by cable ties.. thanks again
for all the help much appreciated..jim. ps the ram reading is cpuz so the 400 is really 800 but you new that.

Im glad it works well, If you go higher i would keep one eye on the temps using core temps/real temps while running orthos, Dont really want it over 60 degrees.
If your ram voltage is set manually i would now set the timings manually to 4 4 4 12 in bios, As your ram is rated at 1066Mhz i can see no problem why it wont be happy at that speed, Will give a performance increase as well.
Your in a good position to overclock the pants off of your rig now, Your memory has given you headroom but if you overclock it beyond 400FSB i would set the timings back to default(maybe lower them again when stable)

Glad its going well for you
warm regards

how right you are, set ram 44412 runs fine. run orthos cpu test for 4 hours got bored, ran ram blend test got bored. temps asus pc probe= max 45c probably innacurate.
cpuz c2d temp plugin = max core 0 = 33. core 1 = 22. i dont trust any of them, but before o/c my 120mm fan on my thermalright cooler ran at 494 and pc probe kept warning me
of low fan speed. faulty fan thinks i and pc probe threshold will not go below 600. running orthos finally got the fan up to just above threshold, its a big fan and is rated for a lot higher
rpm than that. its plugged into the board so if the boards happy with the fan speed so am i, of course i could try the blowlamp test , maybe not..
the nice thing about building my own rig, is the piece of junk i bought from pc world is now usefully running linux..it gave me great pleasure to mangle microsofts finest before
linux ate what was left of it..cheers people jim.

Asus suite temps are definately not to be trusted(asus suite gives me 12 degrees!), Your far better off googling core temps and real temps which are much better, Your fan speed should be over 1000rpm for an overclock, I set mine using Asus suite fan control, I click the box "enable CPU fan control" and set it to optimal, you should give it a try.

Im not being funny but have you got your CPU cooler plugged in to the cpu fan slot?

warm regards
