After reading about the problems with AVG8 free in this week's magazine by A.French, the Ask Aaron page, I thought I'd check the forum. I get the mag every week but rarely visit the forum.
I thought I'd have a look to see if anybody had the same problem as me but there are quite a few threads to look through. I checked a few but no joy. So I thought I'd make my own.
I also tried to make a thread on the AVGfree forum. I ended up going in circles. Me trying to log-on, emailing I couldn't and getting the reply -If you have problems please use the AVGfree forum.

So the problem is:- Occassionally, for no reason I can understand, I get a second system tray icon pop up with a white forward arrow in the middle. Right-click and I get 2 options. Continue all scans and Stop all scans. Click any of these and nothing seems to happen. Open up the AVG interface and no scanning is taking place. I disabled scanning anyway after installing. I never see the point in it personally.
I have tried opening Windows Task Manager but as I don't know the difference between what was there before this so called scan started and once it has started it's hard to tell.
Next time it happens that's it. I'll try Avast or something.
There is a thread in the AVGfree forum with the same problem. No replies.

It's one of those things that AV providers take for granted, that scanning for viruses is a different activity to having the anti-virus signature library updated. (Analogous to having reference books that you then never read.)
When AV software is installed, the current default is for Updates to be downloaded daily or when the PC is switched on, but you need to periodically scan for the presence of such viruses for them to be actually detected and neutralized. At the current level of Internet infestation, the default is probably for a daily scan or after a large batch of signature updates. For AVG that's the second white arrow symbol, saying that an automatic scan is under way.
Note that another AVG agent will probably automatically scan incoming emails, delaying their receipt. You can change the default settings, but it's not a good idea to suppress all scanning, as that can allow Trojan activity to go on undetected.
I hope that this helps.

Whenever I download something I right-click the file and use the the "scan with AVG" option. I always download and save it instead of opening it as soon as it's downloaded.
I said I don't do system scanning. Actually I do maybe once every 6 months. AVG never finds anything.
That thread I linked to on AVGfree forums. Nobody has replied. I'd take a stab that there's a particular bit of software that AVG doesn't like that we both have. Shame I can't use the forum.
It hasn't happened today. I've wrote down a list of all the AVG processes that show in Task Manager, and MS' Process Monitor just to make sure, and there are 4.
If the problem starts again I'll have a look. It's not that I mind a scan. It's just that it doesn't seem to be scanning.

Hi Red Breast
Next time you see the second AVG icon with the white arrow, try double-clicking on it and it should display a window showing scanning progress with the number of files examined counting up, which can take a very long time to complete if you have a lot of software installed. Stopping it too soon, before completion, can mean that some files never even get scanned !

(Edit PS - six months between full scans is rather risky, even if you don't access the Internet much. Given current threat levels, once a week or more frequently might be wiser, depending upon your Internet use.)

I've tried that. The only thing the sys tray icon responds to is a right-click giving me the 2 options. Mouse over and they don't even go darker. Like I say open the AVG user interface and it tells me no scanning is taking place.
I still haven't had the problem since.
Also, like I say when I do scan I've never had problems anyway. Zero. Sometimes when I hear of other peoples problems I think what on earth are you doing on your PC. Anyway that's not for me to ask.

Thank you for the feedback Red Breast
I have non-free AVG8 and get three sub-menu options when I right-click that little icon, so I guess that some functions simply don't exist in the free version.
As to different experiences, different folk face different levels of threat, depending upon how they are connected to the Net and whether they have been assessed as a potential target by third parties. Some lucky folk are shielded by ISP servers that have professional software and hardware installed, and so are never exposed to threats and therefore quite oblivious to other folks problems. Mind you, in the extreme, that can mean that they are restricted to plain text emails, with no attachments. Other folk, using poorly configured and poorly maintained ISP servers may be part of a cluster perceived as an 'easy mark' and under intense threat. Such folk are well advised to take a 'belts and braces' approach to their own IS suites. (In my own case, past changes of ISP server have dramatically changed experienced threat levels.)

Talk about conspiracy theories!

This simply doesn't happen, people are generally targeted or become a victim of 'threats' as a result of their own failings, (replying to, clicking on, running unverified applications etc.). They are certainly not picked on due to their choice of ISP and/or the server software they carry.

@ Captain CAD
Change your words to 'are exploited by' those user reactions and I'll agree with you. Otherwise, let's agree to differ. You have your opinion and experiences, I have mine.

No!

Exploiting an ISP's server due to outdated or poor security has very little bearing on us, the 'end user'

My statement stands and requires no word change(s), perhaps you read it incorrectly or made judgement without fully digesting!

I have passed no opinion, I'm simply stating facts.
