| can anyone point me in the direction of an up-to-date list that compares and rates antivirus software and antispyware software? cheers

I think the term 'spyware' is used too often and too loosely, by too many people, in reference to undesirable features in legit software, esp security software. It's just careless description.

The tests at av-comparatives.org aren't bad either, check the docs on the test methodology first though.
No really comparable tests for dedicated anti-malware afaik.
spywarewarrior.com have a good anti-spyware feature comparison chart, but it hasn't been updated in a long time.
There are lists of security tools in the freeware/shareware sticky thread on the Other Stuff board as well.

| no, i would definately only refer to spyware when discussing the type that didn't come with legit software for example anything that i didn't know and wouldn't want on my pc and obviously anything that could cause problems for me with my financial and privacy details. edit...now checked that thread freakshow, that webwasher looks good. i will have a look into that.
