I bought a new Asus laptop this week from a well known E-tailer.
Due to the fact that I will never use the copy of Vista that came pre-installed, I am considering refusing the EULA and claiming a refund for the unused licence.
Does anyone have any experience of attempting this process and how did you get on?

Never had Vista but you should contact the retailer/manufacturer first.
There's a phone number and e-mail address here if you get no joy.

Please use tinyurl to reduce the size of links.

Rejecting the Eula and installed operating system is fine, and the retailer can't stop you from doing so, however you may discover that the retailer may then refuse to honour any warranties on the hardware..

Just a question for Mad Malc; how would software effect a hardware warranty ?

The hardware v software issue.
PCworld refused to honour a warranty on a laptop that had a failed lid hinge because the owner had installed Linux on it!
I wonder if they would have tried that if he had upgraded to Vista?
But on the other hand, if a hard disk, display or graphics card failed, they could argue that it was due to the drivers causing the hardware to malfunction, and in some cases that could actually be right - especially with reference to displays, although they seem a lot more resilient these days.
In the end, some companies will try anything to avoid honouring warranties, and other just do the honest thing.
Maybe we need a list...

Hi Stoney
I read an article in a Linux mag that Xorg used to eat Cathode Ray Tube monitors, but cathode ray tube monitors became more robust.
So my guess is with a laptop should you change the TFT's refresh rate etc, by either altering it from with in the installed operating system, or installing another operating system (not necessarily linux, it could be a Vista to XP Downgrade) then the warranty is gone.

In the end I have decided to keep the Vista licence.
My son will be going to uni in two years and I might pass the laptop on to him for his work as his current laptop is very big, heavy and noisy.
