Wondering whether i should disable my Home Hub firewall, and use a proper one....?
I've had no end of problems with our "HomeHub" (v1.5) and the horrendous firewall. It uses "Devices" which it assignes a friendly name to an IP address. Then you can create rules in "Game and application sharing" to apply to the friendly name.
This is causing no end of problems for me as I have multiple VMs, and a 360 behind my Linksys router in my room and the HomeHub has great problems trying to detect which device is which as it seems to use the Linksys routers address for each device, so the firewall rules dont get applied. Plus the fact that you cant apply the same rule to multiple, or all devices, you have to recreate it, again and again for each device!
Its horrible!
I have a Linksys router flashed with the DDWRT firmware that has a decent built in firewall which allows proper port forwarding to (multiple) IP addresses, not friendly names.
Would it be a good idea to remove the HomeHub firewall? Other laptops are running Norton Internet Security (ack ) so have a software solution in place. I would configure my Linksys firewall.
EDIT: If it was up to me not my dad, the HomeHub would have been put in a brown box and ebayed and a decent ADSL router put in its place!!!
Thanks

Having two routers in your network will be causing problems, unless you really know your stuff. Port Forwarding to multiple IP addresses is also out of the capabilities of most "home" devices. Can you not use the Linksys with an ADSL modem in place of the Home Hub? That would seem the most logical approach as having a hardware firewall is a good thing.

Sorry I should have been a little clearer, the home hub is way away downstairs by the main phone socket. The linksys box is in my room and is configured to act as a Client Bridge with the HomeHub.
I need the linksys box in my room as it has 4 ethernet ports built in. It does not have ADSL functionality built in.

| Without spending any money you're a bit stuffed. As the Home Hub firewall won't do as you want, you really have no alternative but to turn it off. Just make sure your PCs firewalls are robust though

I was thinking of getting a proper hardware firewall, ive seen Netgear ones for below £50, but I dont get how I could implement this before the HomeHub. Theres no point in having it in place after the home hub becuase the signal goes out through the wireless.

| You need to replace the Home Hub and you could use the Linksys as it does what you want. You'd need an ADSL modem to attach to the WAN port of the Linksys and a Wireless Access Point for the bedroom with a switch for the two devices. The Buffalo WHR-G54S is a DSL router with 4 ports but can be turned into a WAP with the flick of a switch. At £35 it's a bargain and would seem ideal for the bedroom. For an ethernet ADSL modem, look at the Linksys AM200 for £27. You can get both at broadbandbuyer.co.uk
