AFAIK to make black they simply emit a wavelength beyond our visual range, which our puny organic eyes report as black by default.

Not sold on Cuil myself. It's going to take a lot to move me away from my well known Google.

If they had just made the background silver instead of black they could have used it to solar power the search engine.
