my mom's friend at work has told her that she cannot even get onto the internet and believed it to be a virus stopping her.  from what my mom said she mentioned, i would be surprised if she has ANY anti-virus/spyware protection and it sounds bad.  i put avira, spyware terminator, superantispyware and malwarebytes on cd so she could extract them to her pc and run them but has told my mom that it doesn't seem to let her install the programs???

i have now asked my mom to get the pc and i would have a go.

my questions are...

firstly, any recommendations?

secondly, is there any way of getting superantispyware and malwarebytes to run from usb as i can only find them in NON-portable versions which if she is correct about not letting the programs install may not help.

Get your hands on The Ultimate Boot CD for Windows (UBCD4Win). Google for it. Boot the PC from the disc -- it has all sorts of tools, including AV. It doesn't touch the hard disk or run anything from it, so it doesn't matter how bad a state it's in.

I know AVG is on it. It might not be fully up-to-date, but it will be good enough to get rid of the most serious offenders on the host PC and allow you proper access to it. I believe the website for UBCD4Win actually gives a full list of the all the apps on it.

cheers jason i have now done it.  few questions...

i am sure i know the answer but wanted the experts advice, although i had to use my xp disk, this was just for the files on it wasn't it?  it doesn't mean that it is tied to my pc where the disk was installed?  it hasn't used any personal details as it was just the disk that it used not anything else to do with my OS???

next, on the plugin page it says <press config-to update> next to the anti-virus/spyware apps which just updates i presume to the absolute latest definitions(???)

lastly, i no have a folder with all the bits in.  my previous experience with an iso file is that it has only been one file but this folder has many parts in it, any idea what parts i drag into nero's burning section?

No, it's not tied to the PC. As you say, it's just to get the installation files.

If you've got lots of different files, it's not an ISO. The easiest thing is to do another build, this time making sure you get the builder to burn the build straight to CD (using the unbuilt StarBurn). It's one of the options near the bottom of the final screen.

cheers jason, re-did it with the burn option.  all seems well but before i test it on my own system i just wanted to confirm...

this couldn't damage a system could it?  it can't effect the main OS?  i ask as it is not for me that it will be used and i wouldn't want to cause further problems

Well, yes, if you use the tools to modify the OS installed on the system, you can naturally cause trouble. Just don't do anything you're not sure about. Stick to the anti-virus and anti-spyware tools to begin with -- they won't do any harm.
