In the options, there should be a setting to block conversations from users not on your friends list. I'm in work at the moment, so I can't check where it is.
I can't find this in Options - can you help? (Unless I am misreading it!)

Doh!! Thanks, I had that done already, but when I was checking for it I couldn't see it !! 
The reason I was checking was I had a window, very much like a sign-in window pop-up in the bottom right hand corner, with a rude message and gyrating person in the window! I wondered how it was possible, how they knew of me! And I was searching for the thread I started some time back to remind me what it said !
