Whenever i start MSN messenger on my laptop at work, the 2wire router we have shuts down & will then continue to switch on & off at random times, sometimes its on for a minute, other times its on for 20 maybe more, before shutting down.

I logged onto the router itself & found at least 100 different listings for msnmsgs, each one with its own TCP/UDP port. I put my laptop into the demilitarized zone, which worked for about 10 mins, then the router switched my laptop to being back under the firewall, which then caused to router to shut down. I tried running messenger on the other 2 PCs here & the same thing happends everytime.

I'm 100% sure its not my laptop or messenger, simply as i use messenger every night at home with no issues!!

If anyone has a way round this i would be greatful!

Cheers

Rich

I think this is to do with UPNP (universal plug and play) and its a way that your pc can let programs automatically deal with what ports need to be configured in your router.

Make sure your version of messenger is the latest one.

disable UPNP in your router

Thanks for your reply!

I have just logged onto it & can't find any settings for UPNP, apparently 2wire don't give support for UPNP!! grrr!!

Ah well, thank god for 3G & unlimited data on my mobile plan!!
