| Hi folks running AV8 on w xp pro. I run the programme very frequently deleting all search and report scamware that is shown, I do a full scan and I am bang up to date on updates. Over the last two days whenever I switched on the tray icon shows a red blob that implies that a reboot is required. (thats what I understand it to mean, in the past when that red blob appeared it was alway after an update) I have tried reloading AV but after two/three minutes it reapears. I have searched through the history file but there is nothing that stands out. there is however no update schedule shown when viewing the advanced settings in the tools menue. The update manager on the interface also tells me that '' update managet short state text check failed'' any thought on the problem would be appreciated

| Hi, I too have an almost identical problem - I loaded AVG Free 8 and for weeks all was great, suddenly a red blob/white "!" on the taskbar AVG icon, checks show that the following message is shown against "Update Manager":- "Database Update is Disabled" I can update and then the Update Manager is shown as active, switch off and is back to disabled again. I've not tried a clean re-install but it seems that I'm not the only one with the problem - whatever I seem to do to make the "U/D Manager" active is ineffective. Sorry no help, but I'm company

There seems to be lots of problems with AVG on the forum since the upgrade to 8, if you are having grief take it off. There are lots of free AV’s out there, try a different one. After many years with AVG, I moved to Avast, very pleased so far.
As alex3410 says look at CaptainCAD’s thread.

| I too have had endless problems with Avg 8 and have since installed Avast on all my machines. Avira is probably worth a look too. Cheers, Whiskey.
