Straying slightly from the OP's question - if it had a legit sticker but the person had lost the original CD could you reinstall with another CD and change the product key using say regedit?
Would this work - does anyone know?

Yes, you can. CDs aren't tied to a given product key -- you can use the same CD for any number of different installations. However, the CD being used needs to be the same type (Home or Pro) and the same issue (SP1, SP2, etc.) as the product key you want to use. Even then it's not guaranteed to work, but it usually does.

Hiya!
Get your mate to download and run Magical Jelly Bean Keyfinder v2.0.1 - open source software with no 'nasties'. This will give him the Windows product key. I suggest he then contacts Microsoft - telephone is best - I had the same problem and a quick phone call sorted it out. For some reason (although touch wood it hasn't happened for a while) every time I did anything (from adding a hard drive to just inserting a USB stick!) I had to re-validate and on one occasion even be told my very legit retail copy wasn't legit (hence the phone call)! Gotta love M$...
