The E0 steppings are the new overclocking kings, lower voltages, more efficient, temp sensor issues addressed, and some very big overclocks being posted for the E8600.
The E8400 & E8500 Wolfdales with E0 steppings are due out soon and prices are the same as the current Wolfdales with C0 stepping, and therein lies the problem, nobody will want the C0 steppings that currently sit on dealer shelves, if your thinking about ordering a new E8400 or E8500 Wolfdale wait for the new E0 steppings to start appearing, most e-tailers won't tell you what stepping they are shipping, some will try price gouging for a guaranteed E0, the best place to check are the popular forums to see which UK e-tailers are shipping the E0's. Is it worth waiting for the E0's, I would say a definite yes even if your not overclocking!

| Yes I've noticed this E0 stepping gubbins...they are due to be released on the 22nd I believe but it'll take a while for them to filter down into e-tailors stock. I've noticed alot of e-tailors actually specify the old Q6600 as G0 stepping, so in time perhaps the new Wolfdales may follow suit. The quads are a bit mixed with regards to E0, all the Q9650s already come E0 (if you can afford one!) - but the Q9550 doesn't, so I'm waiting a bit as I have my sights on an Q9550 come September, will mildly overclock this to perhaps 3.2GHz so E0 may help...I'm finally buying an all new high end gaming computer! The prices for a Q9550 differ - from as low as £202 to as much as £350! I did set my early sights on the Q9650 but the price is higher than I thought so the £150 difference would buy me the new VelociRaptor drive

Dave NO! Don't buy a raptor, they are small capacity, noisy, and not really all that fast (ok, they are fairly quick). The Samsung Spinpoint F1 drives are faster, and give you exponentially more storage for your money... a 10k rpm is nothing but hot air when up against perpendicular recording...

Exponentially? You mean the storage space or VFM is ever increasing?

Thanks for your opinions...I know I know, but its a 300GB Raptor and has plenty of room for two OSes only...I know the Samsungs are 1TB and just as good (if not better value), but I'd never use all that space, plus I'm already carrying over two current SATA hard drives in good condition...I already own a 74GB Raptor and I have been pleased with it...that one will go into Allendale eventually (OS only)
I'm in two minds about the Q6600 - I know its an excellent chip, but just can't help having the newer Q9550...actually at £113 for the Q6600 I could upgrade Allendale from my E4500 and have two quad gaming / encoding machines. I'm also looking to buy an HD4870 X2 and 24" monitor with the Q9550, but its now going off topic...
Think I'm getting carried away after saving for so long...budget is £2,000 perhaps a re-think is in order
