My computer has lost its internet connection and I've no idea how to sort it. It may be spyware related as I have found ctfmon.exe in the process list, but spy-bot comes back clean.
Yesterday I plugged my computer back in (after a few weeks unplugged) and turned it on. It turned out it had been on hibernate, though it came back with no problems. The only difference being when it was turned off it had an ethernet cable plugged in, and when it restarted it didn't. However I have done this before with a laptop and had no ill effects.
I decided now my computer is on the other side of the room to connect via wireless (onboard the mobo, an Asus P5K-e Wifi). I can't use the wired connection at the mo as I had to cut the end off the wire to get the cable out of the room to re-route and I haven't got a new end yet.
I loaded the Asus wireless software and connected to our bthomehub with no problems.
Unfortunately after a reboot things went wrong and now I have no internet connection. The wireless connects to the home hub, but not to the internet. I know its not hub related as I am now on dads computer, also connected to the hub.
I figured it may be firewall related so decided to remove Comodo (dad's now got a 3 comp license for bullguard so I was gonna give that a go) and removed avast to avoid conflicts with bullguard (also no problem as I dislike it and was contemplating replacing it with something else anyway). At this point I have a comp without firewall or AV that still will not connect to the internet (ultimate security eh?). Windows security center had a fit and popped up a reminder showing I had no AV, but still shows comodo as running. I can't stop it, as its uninstalled and there doesn't seem to be a process in the task manager relating to it. I tried re-installing it, so I could remove it again but that was equally unsuccessful at shutting it down.
Now I am out of ideas. Bullguard tells me I should remove Comodo before installing it (after I removed comodo that is).
The only other thing I have touched on the computer was to remove VMWare Server but I can't see this affecting things.

| Firstly ctfmon.exe is part of Office, so it's not a nasty. Are you getting an IP address? If not, then that usually points to the wireless password being wrong. If you are getting an IP address, can you ping anything?

ricedg (20/08/2008) Are you getting an IP address?
Also, if you are, what does it start with e.g. 192.168 or 169.254 etc

Sorry about the delay in getting back. I've just been to Reading Festival.
I don't have MS Office installed, instead preferring OpenOffice, hence why I thought ctfmon.exe could be a problem, though possibly it got installed with some other MS software.
I do get an IP (192.168.1.66 at the moment) and can connect to the routers home page at bthomehub.home
I can't ping anything though. I tried to ping google at "216.239.51.104" and at "www.google.com" and got destination host unreachable. I also tried to ping "forum.micromart.co.uk" and got the same response, though it told me the IP was "217.174.253.91"
I can only assume this means its not a DNS problem as the computer found an IP address (though whether its a correct one is unknown).
