The laptops carried by astronauts reportedly do not have any anti-virus software on them to prevent infection.

One question, Why not?

The space agency also plans to put in place security systems to stop such incidents happening in the future.

Thank god the Aliens in Independance Day never did that or we'd all be done for.

Phitore, the reason why is vaguely mentioned.

The astronauts don't have a direct net connection. Items are sent to NASA (and scanned to/from the station), and then sent by NASA.

Yes, but, it mentions this is not the first time they have had problems.
I have worked in more than one place where nothing from the outside ie. laptop, UBS pen drive, external drive etc. are allowed to connect to the network without being checked first.
This is standard procedure in lots of offices as they don't trust the "unknowledgable" staff.
So why is NASA different?
I would have thought you would have to have some sort of clearence form about eighteen people and everthing being brought in and taken out was monitored BIG time.

I've obviously been watching to much T.V.
