Hey all, i have been given my sisters pc to repair/sort out due to a few problems with it not giving out sound & not installing programs. On closer inspection there is no access to the admin account, there are a number of user accounts on the computer & a admin account folder but no access to it through ANY of the user accounts & none of the user accounts have admin privilages. At the moment im thinking of a complete reinstall of the operating system (as its quite a mess whats on there anyway & running slower than it should) but, i do not have the driver discs (sister threw them away, bless!) & i went to the manufacturer website (Lenova) but can not find this model on there (no model numbers visible on outer/inner case or in windows as im aware). So heres my questions: >>How do i find out (or what is the best way of finding out) what drivers i'll be needing to find? >>I can't access the BIOS (can't get it to work on the prompt, a Lenova screen comes up at coldboot asking to press enter to "skip boot process" but doesnt respond to keyboard) so is a reinstall of windows wise? I was going to format the disc via my pc but i'll need to change boot prioty, right? >>Failing that, i've not tried reinstalling through the op system but given the lack of admin privilages would this work? | Welcome to the Forums You wouldn't expect access to the Administrator account through a normal log in.
If you boot in Safe Mode the account will be there. and you can add a user with admin priviledges.

I assume it is XP that is used by the pc - if so, go here to get an admin account. I'm not sure why you want an admin account for xp as most xp pcs are not securely locked down.
If it is Vista on a laptop you have a different set of problems, and probably want to get an OEM XP disk while they are still available. Again, I'm not sure why you want an Administrator account as you can always right click on a file and choose 'Run As' Administrator. It is NOT recommended to run as Administrator and you don't need the account except in exceptional circumstances you may need to use it for networked shared folders if you run into problems with passwords and/or user names
However if you must be a Vista Administrator then to access the Admin account in Vista (Vista Home assumed - its easier in the other versions), do the following:
a) Set up a command prompt in Administrator mode. Go to the 'run' box, and type in cmd. DO NOT hit Enter! Instead hit Ctl+Shift+Enter. You will then get a UAC prompt - I assume that you DO know the Admin password, or you are wasting your time! When you get the command prompt window type:
net user Administrator/active yes
Now hit enter and close the command prompt window
b) Log out and then log in as Administrator.

If all else fails and you do need to wipe it and install a fresh copy of XP, there is a a tool to detect model number on Lenovo website here http://tinyurl.com/58uc6h . This will give you access to the right drivers for your system

| Actually the easiest way to get into any of the control panel settings is to go to the c:windows\system 32 folder, then look up the appropriate control Here you want to run, probably mmsys.cpl in your case and right click on it and select run as ... and use the built in administrator account.

Seconded. You don't need to jump through any hoops unless the Admin account is passworded and you don't know the password.
