Did you install kernel source and development packages, or do you still need to?
There should be a readme file with the linux driver, which tells you which commands to use.
Granville, pass me a cloth.

thanks for replying Freddo. yes i did install the kernal modules etc. there is a read me file which i have followed. when i open a shell as root and follow the instructions i get a page of text telling me what has happened which being new to linux i don't really understand. the text does say in places that errors occur but it seems to carry on with the installation. however the modem doesn't work. it is only recognised as dev/ttyS0 and gets as far as modem ready but then fails to get any further. any help will be appreciated.

Ugh. HAM modems. AFAIAA, the ambient/intel HAMs are WinModems aren't they. Whilst the support for winmodems is improving in the later linux distros, why not just buy a cheap Hayes modem which works straight out of the box on most Linux's ! The last one I bought was about a fiver off Ebay !
Cheers,
Paul.

Thanks for info I had already thought that this might be the trouble so I have in fact done exactly as you advised. Got it for £3.20.
Thanks again
