My son is at uni in a flat with a shared wireless router. all users were advised to connect to the router using an access point, which he has done. However, the network is unsecure (at the router). Is there any way that the access point can be used to secure his connection?

Do not know the router mke/model. His access point is Belkin.

Ta muchly,
Frank.

Sorry no, the security has to be applied at both ends.

A good firewall on the PC will stop unwelcome intruders though.

He has Zone Alarm installed on the PC. He always seems to have odd things happen and I suspect a breach somehow getting into it through the firewall.

Thanks,
Frank.

Shouldn't happen.

Get him to go to Shields Up! at home (or somewhere similarly safe) https://www.grc.com/x/ne.dll?bh0bkyd2
That will show if there's any holes in the defences and tell him how to plug them
Do the same when on the wireless network just in case ZA is being too trusting of that network.
