I am planning to have a winxp based rig just for off line gaming, I dont want to get involved with online games because I think I would find them too addictive. I find normal strategy/RPG games addictive enough as it is!
I can think of a variety of reasons why keeping the rig up to date might be necessary but I am not sure if any of them apply to gaming? I mean if the PC isnt connected to the net then security updates can go take a leap but are there updates that are useful for other things?
Advice appreciated.

Hi vapd
Most games seem to specify SP2 (with DirectX9c), but why not download a copy of SP3, just in case, whilst a decent imaging program could allow faithful backup and restoration of a really good game, although it can put a heavy demand on storage space, so perhaps a large USB drive for backups ?
Edit PS - If you want to go DirectX10 using offline Vista, a similar logic might apply.
