Does anybody know of any software that for taking screenshots, with more functionality than simply pressing screenshot and then having to paste into another program.

Preferably I would like to be able to save the screenshot without having to open a new program. Also the ability to select active windows, or select a smaller area of the screen (so I don't have to crop the image later) would be good.

Basically something similar to Ksnapshot but that works on windows.

Many thanks

Snagit is about the best. It's not free, but there's a fully functional trial.

Thanks.

I will look into snagit though would obviously prefer a full program to a trial version. I also found one called WinSnap. None yet seem to run in the background, though its possible to add them to the start up and leave in the notification area.

From a perfectionist point of view, i'd like something that doesn't run until I press print screen, and then loads the program. However all the suggestions seem to do what I need admirably.

Free tool from the peeps that made SnagIt.

It's an absolutely awesome tool that I use almost every day: it has loads of options (like you can upload to screencast but also to ftp, email, locally save or just copy). It also does videos captures

The only downside is that it needs an active internet connection because you have to login to use it not a huge biggy tho.

Cheers,
Tom

An example which uses the PrtSc button as the default hotkey is Gadwin PrintScreen, which is available in both Free and Professional versions.

Bug Shooting is quite interesting too!
