Can anyone help with this problem please when I start XP up it freezes the start icon and button are inoperable, my way around this is to alt ctrl del and click on any icon bearing in mind nothing is shown to be running, and then everything is ok until the next time I start up.
previously this used to happen when I had an external hard drive connected I disconnected it and did not have any further problems until now
thanks in anticipation

Right click start, click properties, have a look through there to see if you have disabled any thing to do with the start button.

Alternativley you canpress f8 on start and try safe mode or system restore, if you cannot get to system restore via control panel.
Also have a look in add remove programs there may be some stuff in there not required, plug in drive wise..

Post back. additionaly there may be a problem in device manager.

The Lost Artifact is not lost. Why? Because I have it!

open a dos prompt and type

Thanks for your help I restored my system to an earlier date but that did not cure it when I restored it back to the present the problem had gone? Does that make sense, also the advice to type msconfig is that in start, run, or where do I accessdos prompt I really do not know computers all that well
thanks
