As long as you don't any personal info in I'd be happy to do it with a virgin XP disc from 2001! As soon as I install a anti-virus and anti-spyware I do a full scan (mainly because they will keep telling me to do a full scan) and it'll clean everything out. While SP3'd XPs will have plugs filled, when I do the updates and scans, those things will be checked anyway.

Using the infamous phrase 'Yeah But'; I'd be very careful only to use the Windows Update site, and refrain from all other browsing! I gather that even some of the Government's info pages were broken into and IFrame exploits installed. Some of those could be very nasty on a completely unprotected system, and I think I'd want a VERY good AV installed pdq to make sure I caught them.
I'd still recommend nLite and slipstreamed SP3 for some peace of mind.
