Hi all, and I have a real stinker for you here I suspect,

I visited a friend recently and their housemates pc was crashing or freezing regularly, and failed to turn off, simply showing the 'windows is shutting down' splach and then freezing. Shutdown then relied on holding the power button in. Not ideal.

I opened it up suspecting a bit of overheating, and it was choked with dust. I took it home and gave it a good clean out, a bit of fresh thermal paste, and ran a chkdsk and a few other bits to give it a chance. Result was - connected up to my wired network at home it has behaved faultlessly. Fires up, shuts down, runs for hours for defragmenting or virus scanning, all without complaint. Sooooo.... I return it and it puts on a good show, donlge reattached it connects to their router first go, we check a few sites, and then shut it down. The machine goes through the motions ok, but after everything goes blank and disk activity stops the fans are still running.

What do we do? It's a Medion PC, xp3200+, 512Mb on an MSI mobo, XP sp3, connecting to Sky wireless with a Netgear WG111T dongle. Could it be a conflict with it's own network drivers as it worked fine on their old NTL router connecting via ethernet?

All help gratefully received, thanks in advance,

Roger.

dodgy cables?  worth replacing some to see.

is it connected to a power block?  try alternative.

bad ventilation where it is placed?

not sure what the problem could be but as it works at yours and not his, it must be a physical one not software or windows.

I wouldn't say for certain it must be a physical problem. Our computer at home sometimes displays similar symptoms. It will display the shutting down screen, but take ages on it. Sometimes a few hours pass and it eventually shuts down, other times it freezes completely i.e. the mouse won't move, caps lock light won't turn on/off.

My spare rig displays these symptoms when programs are still running on it when im trying to shut down, Have a look in task manager to see if any errant applications or services stand out.

the reason i say it is hardware  such as a cable or similar is that it worked at his own house.  maybe he was using his own cables, or power block etc.

OK guys, fine suggestions one and all, and the cables one I can try out when I next pop round this week.

What I am most curious about is whether or not the move from wired to wireless networking could be the culprit. It all seemed to be ok on his old wired modem, and worked without fault on my wired network, Virgin media cable modem and D-Link DI-604 router.

I have done a little (rather depressing) googling about the Netgear WG111T dongle that he has, and frankly the whole Netgear forum was alive with people with assorted problems, but sadly I can't find a repetition of this one. Other places weren't any cheerier either!

Do you think swapping his dongle for a PCI wireless card might help? I have two here and could try either. Alternatively (for those with a long memory) do you remember when a Win98SE machine went onto an ethernet connection, it would often show similar symptoms and you needed two files to return it to correct shutdown. I have them stored on my system as 'shutfix' and 'ndisfix', and they were an essential upgrade and came direct from m$oft themselves. Does an XP version exist? I know it shouldn't have to, but this is m$oft at their best......

Onwards and upwards,

Roger.

Not sure about the relevancy here, but I have noticed that when I've got networking enabled on my VM, windows does take longer to shut down. Could it be hanging when trying to close the wireless connection? Might be worth manually shutting down the wireless network connection before shutting down windows to see if that helps.

good guess tighthead, you may have something there.  i seem to remember my old laptop taking ages sometimes and that had an old wireless pcmcia card.

Evening all, just had time to pop past and see if anyone's had any great ideas, and there's one right here now. We did try using the 'Safely Remove Hardware' button and removing the dongle, but we didn't try shutting the service first. Doh!

I shall pass this on in the morning and see if it bears any fruit.

Thanks guys,

Roger.
