It (the thread generally) does need cleaning up.
I know grc.com has been mentioned, but a word for the Wizmo freeware from there.
http://www.grc.com/wizmo/wizmo.htm
A 37kb exe with a couple dozen power management and op drive functions available with the relevant switch(es) in the 'path' field of a shortcut to it - and a dozen or so shortcut icons to choose from for the given task(s). Run the exe directly to get more help.
Can shut down, reboot, turn off monitor, blank monitor with black or the desktop 'background' colour, logout, hibernate, standby, open or close op drive(s), adjust simple sound settings (volume etc), run it's own screensaver (the customising switches for which didn't work for me, btw), set a timer for most of these functions, or perform most combinations of them within a single shortcut. Finally, a worthwhile use of the Quick Launch toolbar.
I'm keen, if it isn't obvious.

Do you have a Maxtor or Seagate hard drive - if so you're in luck! MaxBlast and DiscWizard offer these facilities, are Vista compatible and are 'powered' by Acronis. Have a read of the manuals re cloning, partitioning, etc.

From my understanding of the documentation, all you have to have is a Maxtor/Seagate drive in your system - it doesn't have to be the one involved in the cloning or back-up process.

| A link to amazing collections of open source software for linux, windows and mac. While not as comprehensive as SourceForge the applications are presented in a much more user friendly manner. Worth a browse!
