| I'm an absolute beginner to Linux so it well may be that I have upcocked in configuring the desktop and adjusting the taskbar, but I don't have a trash icon in the 'Add to panel' dialogue box and I can't find it anywhere else. I can delete stuff, but where do I go to restore/permanently delete? Thanks for your attention

On the bottom bar.
Right Click > Add to Panel > Deleted Items
It's back.
Right click on it to move it wherever you like.

| 'Fraid not, Attercop. The deleted items folder is empty. I have also tried entering 'Trash' in the add to panel search bar, but the add button is greyed out.

Hmm strange. Maybe something went wrong while you were configuring. You could try resetting everything back to the defaults like this:
1. Open a Terminal and shut down gconfd: gconftool --recursive-unset /apps/panel then press enter.
2. Then: rm -rf ~/.gconf/apps/panel and enter again
3. Lastly: pkill gnome-panel and enter.
This should restore all panels back to default settings and make them reappear if missing. Obviously in your case it's the Wastebasket you're hoping will return to normal.

| I'm assuming you meant for me to enter these as three separate commands i.e. hit enter after each and that the first command is: gconftool--recursive-unset/apps/panel with no spaces. No such file or directory I am told!

Hi GateKeeper
I don't use Ubuntu but in order to add deleted items I just right click on the task bar, click on 'add Applet to panel' scroll down to 'Wastebin' highlight it and click the add to panel button.
Whilst I'm using KDE it is on Mint which is based on Ubuntu 8.04.1 so just maybe the trash/deleted applet is called 'Wastebin'

I actually had accidentally added a space where there shouldn't have been one, but not like you have it above. I've edited my original directions above and now they're correct. I would recommend you copy and paste the italics one by one as that negates the possibility of typos causing the commands not to be recognised.
Give it a go and tell us if it works. If it doesn't we'll try something else.

Sorry for the delay in responding.
Still no trash or wastebasket icon. The rm command appears as a file on the desktop, but there is nothing in it.
However, I do have a deleted items folder that can be moved to the taskbar. A 'rose by another name?'
